Fire sprinklers are an innovative system that has been saving properties and lives for more than a century. Modern fire sprinkler systems are more sophisticated, complex, and powerful than their earlier counterparts, making them suitable for larger applications, such as hospitals, warehouses, schools, and more. Yet, if the water pressure running through these sprinklers is not sufficient, they are useless. This is where Connecticut fire pump systems play a crucial role.
Fire pumps are an integral part of fire protection equipment and are used to help sprinklers maintain the required pressure and protect the property effectively. They are used to increase the pressure when the water supply is not strong enough to support the hydraulic requirements of the fire protection system. Most fire pumps can pump up to 5,000 GPM of water.
These pumps are designed to activate whenever there is a predetermined loss of pressure in the fire sprinkler system. Once activated, they begin to pump the water into the fire sprinkler system to ensure the water flows at a sufficient rate to suppress the fire effectively.
Connecticut fire pump systems are kept in designated pump rooms and are powered by either an electric or diesel engine. Some fire protection systems come with a fire pump.To ensure the fire pump is performing properly, fire pump testing and maintenance are required by the NFPA.
Both electric and diesel fire pumps deliver the same results, but their engines operate in two different ways and require different protocols for testing, maintenance, and installation. Electric engines are cheaper and slightly more common than diesel engines. They also require less maintenance and inspections. However, if you don’t have a backup generator, the electric pump is rendered useless when the power goes out. This can be a serious danger during a fire accident.
That being said, larger applications require diesel fire pumps. These applications include hospitals, schools, and hotels. They require a backup generator used in conjunction with an electric fire pump. Also, diesel fire pumps don’t have the disadvantage of being affected by power outages, making them more reliable. However, they are often more expensive and require more maintenance and testing protocols to keep them in good working condition.
The main goal of fire pump maintenance and testing is to ensure that the operations of the fire pump are working properly. If your fire pump is not performing within the designed parameters, the fire sprinkler system might not perform adequately. This is why you will need to take care of the weekly, monthly, and annual fire pump testing. They should be performed by qualified technicians who are able to deliver detailed information and assist with corrections.
All New York City fire pumps require regular and weekly visual inspections to check on the water pressure, suction, and discharge. Make sure all the valves are in the open position and the controllers are in a normal state.
Both electric and diesel fire pumps should be dry tested for no-flow. This has to be done weekly for diesel fire pumps and monthly for electric fire pumps. These tests can be technically performed by the property’s regular maintenance personnel, who are trained on what to look for and how to perform the tests.
Finally, CT Fire Pumps must undergo full annual tests that put the whole system through its paces. Annual tests should be performed by a licensed professional. During the tests, the technician will monitor the water pressure and then compare the results with the fire pump’s original design specifications. This will ensure that the pump is operating effectively.
In addition to the inspections and tests, maintenance of diesel-powered fire pumps should be done annually. This includes checking fuel filters, batteries, fluid levels, oil filters, etc. Again, make sure that the maintenance part is performed by a certified professional who works on both electric and diesel engines for fire pump application – not just a regular technician.
